Among the many camouflage patterns used by militaries, few carry the mystique and recognition of the Tiger Stripe. Originally developed during the Cold War era, this striking pattern has been tied to special operations forces, unconventional warfare, and the unique challenges of jungle combat.
The Tiger Stripe camouflage pattern traces back to the early 1960s during the Vietnam War. While its exact origins are debated, it is generally believed to be an evolution of the French lizard stripe design used in Indochina during the 1950s. Local South Vietnamese forces adopted modified versions, which soon spread to U.S. Special Forces, Navy SEALs, and advisors operating in Southeast Asia.
The name “Tiger Stripe” comes from its bold, slashing lines of dark and light greens, browns, and blacks that resemble the markings of a tiger. Unlike the blocky designs of later patterns (like woodland or digital), Tiger Stripe had a flowing, organic look ideal for dense, humid environments.
Although never officially standardized across the entire U.S. military, Tiger Stripe became a signature uniform for elite units during the Vietnam War. It was worn by:
U.S. Army Special Forces (“Green Berets”)
Navy SEALs
MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group)
ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) Rangers
Outside Vietnam, the pattern saw limited use in other conflicts where jungle terrain demanded effective concealment. Over time, Tiger Stripe inspired variations and adaptations across multiple countries’ armed forces, from Thailand to the Philippines.
Tiger Stripe camouflage isn’t just a pattern—it’s a legacy. Born in the jungles of Vietnam, worn by some of the most daring soldiers in modern history, and still instantly recognizable decades later, it represents both practical concealment and an enduring symbol of elite warfare.
Whether on the battlefield, in surplus collections, or as part of popular culture, Tiger Stripe has earned its place as one of the most iconic camouflage patterns in military history.
