Canadian CADPAT AR Camouflage Pattern

CADPAT AR (Arid Regions) is the Canadian Armed Forces’ desert-oriented version of the Canadian Disruptive Pattern (CADPAT). It was developed for desert, semi-desert, and savannah environments, particularly for operations where the greener CADPAT TW was less suitable.

Pattern Design

  • Digital/pixelated appearance: Like CADPAT TW, AR uses small, computer-generated blocks that create a disruptive visual effect rather than simply matching the background.
  • Three main brown shades: The pattern is dominated by different tones of brown and tan, allowing it to blend with dry soil, sand, rocks, and sparse vegetation.
  • Irregular distribution: The pixels are arranged in irregular clusters, breaking up the recognizable outline of the wearer.
  • Near-infrared characteristics: CADPAT was designed with near-infrared considerations to improve concealment against certain night-vision and image-intensification systems.

Development & Service

CADPAT AR was developed alongside the original CADPAT Temperate Woodland (TW) pattern. The need for an arid version became particularly important with Canadian operations in Afghanistan, leading to its introduction into service in 2002.

Visual Character

CADPAT AR can be recognized by its:

Tan-and-brown digital blocks + low-contrast desert palette + disruptive pixel structure

Compared with CADPAT TW's distinctive greens, AR has a much warmer sand, khaki, and brown appearance, making it visually closer to the colors of dry terrain.

Legacy

CADPAT AR became strongly associated with Canadian military operations in Afghanistan, where it provided a purpose-built alternative to the woodland-oriented CADPAT TW. Canada later developed CADPAT Multi-Terrain (MT) to provide broader environmental coverage; the MT pattern is being phased in to replace both TW and AR.

In summary: CADPAT AR is Canada's desert digital camouflage—a three-brown disruptive pattern optimized for arid and semi-arid environments and an important part of the Canadian Forces' CADPAT family.
