The Finnish M05 Lumikuvio (lumi meaning snow in Finnish) is the winter camouflage variant of Finland’s modern M05 Maastokuvio camouflage family. Unlike many traditional snow camouflage patterns that simply attempt to make a soldier appear white, Lumikuvio was designed around a more realistic understanding of the Finnish winter environment: snow-covered forests are not empty white landscapes—they are filled with shadows, branches, vegetation, rocks, and irregular dark shapes.

It represents Finland’s long military tradition of adapting equipment to its northern environment, continuing a philosophy shaped by the country’s experience of forest warfare and harsh seasonal conditions.

Design

The M05 Lumikuvio is essentially a winter adaptation of the M05 woodland camouflage concept. Instead of creating a completely separate visual language, Finnish designers reduced the woodland pattern into a winter-specific form.

The pattern consists primarily of:

  • white as the dominant background colour — representing snow cover;
  • dark green irregular blotches — representing exposed vegetation, evergreen trees, branches, and deep winter shadows.

The result is a two-colour disruptive camouflage system.

Its purpose is not simply to "blend into white." A completely white uniform can fail in a forest because the human eye does not perceive winter terrain as a blank surface. A soldier moving through Finnish forests appears against a complex mixture of:

  • snow-covered ground;
  • dark tree trunks;
  • pine and spruce vegetation;

  • uneven snow accumulation.

Lumikuvio introduces dark irregular forms that break the recognizable human silhouette.

M05 Lumikuvio belongs to the broader Finnish M05 camouflage family, developed to replace older Finnish camouflage systems such as M91. The M05 family entered service during the 2000s, with widespread introduction around 2007.

The overall M05 project followed a scientific approach:
