The Frost Pattern of the Finnish Defence Forces
The Finnish M05 Pakkaskuvio (pakkanen meaning frost or freezing weather in Finnish) is the cold-weather camouflage variant of Finland’s modern M05 camouflage family. It occupies the middle ground between the standard green woodland M05 Maastokuvio and the snow-dominant M05 Lumikuvio.
Where Lumikuvio is designed for fully snow-covered landscapes, Pakkaskuvio is designed for the transitional and harsh Nordic conditions where the environment is neither fully green nor completely white: late autumn, frozen forests, frost-covered ground, leafless vegetation, and early winter conditions.
It represents a very Finnish approach to camouflage design:
Do not camouflage for an ideal season. Camouflage for the moment the soldier actually exists in.

The M05 camouflage family was developed around Finland’s unique landscape rather than a generic military environment. The woodland M05 Maastokuvio was based on Finnish forest imagery and refined into a disruptive pattern representing local terrain.
However, Finnish forests change dramatically through the year.
A summer forest contains:

- moss;
- dense foliage;
- deep green shadows.
A frozen Finnish forest looks different:
- vegetation becomes muted;
- grasses turn grey-brown;
- leaves disappear;
- frost creates pale surfaces;

The designers recognized that the bright green tones of summer camouflage become visually incorrect in colder months.
Therefore, Pakkaskuvio modifies the woodland M05 concept rather than replacing it entirely.

M05 Pakkaskuvio emerged as part of the Finnish Defence Forces' broader M05 modernization program.
Before M05, Finland relied mainly on older camouflage systems such as:
- M62, introduced during the Cold War era;
- M91, the immediate predecessor before M05.
The M05 family was developed to provide better concealment, improved clothing systems, and greater adaptation to Finland’s operational environments.
The family entered service in the 2000s, with M05 equipment being issued broadly from around 2007 onward.
Rather than creating a single universal camouflage, Finland developed several related patterns:

The M05 system acknowledges that the same forest can become visually different within months.
3. Continued relevance in modern Finnish forces
Even as Finland adopted newer combat clothing systems through the Nordic Combat Uniform program, Finland retained the M05 camouflage identity. The newer Finnish combat clothing continues to use the M05 family rather than replacing the national camouflage concept.
4. Recognition among military enthusiasts
After Finnish Defence Forces camouflage designs became available commercially in 2016, M05 variants gained international recognition among collectors, outdoor users, and military equipment communities.
Pakkaskuvio remains one of the more distinctive cold-weather military camouflage patterns because it does not imitate Arctic white camouflage—it represents the much more common reality of a frozen but still forested landscape.
